The Auburn-Opelika metro area is located in East Alabama. Cities in this metro area include Auburn, Opelike and northern Phenix City Alabama. From 1900 to-2000, the Auburn-Opelika metro area was the fastest growing metro area in the United States. Metro Auburn-Opelika is also a part of the Greater Columbus Georgia region.

Auburn is the principal city in Metro Auburn-Opelika and the fastest-growing metropolitan area in Alabama. Auburn, called The Loveliest Village On The Plains, is Alabama's largest eastern city. In 2009, it was on US News' Best Places to Live in the United States list.

An historic college town, Auburn is the home of Auburn University, Alabama's oldest university. Auburn's historical district centers around Samford Park and includes Samford Hall - the university's administration building and University Chapel.
